Things to Know - September 6, 2007

September 6, 2007

Good Morning, Teachers,

Discovery Science Center is holding their exciting TEAMS
(Teacher Education Advancement in Math and Science)
workshops again this year.

These workshops are a standards-based, sponsored,
professional development program for K – 3 teachers. They
are held in the Board Room at Discovery Science Center from
4:00 – 6:00 P.M. A light dinner is provided.

Each program uses a storybook as a focus to introduce and
develop science, math, and language art concepts. Teachers
will receive $60.00 worth of classroom materials along with
lesson plans in the hands-on, FREE workshop.

Because of the limited number of reservations available, we
ask that you register for no more than three workshops. If
there are other titles in which you are interested, list
them and your name will be placed on a waiting list. You
may register by return e-mail or fax. Feel free to share
this information and schedule with other K – 3 teachers in
your school. If you require further information or have
questions, call me at 714-542-2823 Ext. 5137.

The Wages of Child Care
September 4, 2007

Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em,
'Certainly I can!' Then get busy and find out how to do it.
Theodore Roosevelt

As we all know, the pay that early childhood professionals
receive is the major challenge of our profession. Early
childhood professionals work as hard as anyone and their
labors make a huge contribution not only to our economy,
but also to the well being and social awareness of future
generations. Yet their paychecks reflect little of this
value to society. In recent years we have been tracking
fees that centers charge to parents and wages they pay to
staff members. Alarmingly, our fees have not risen as fast
as the cost of living, and accordingly, our wages remain
low and may actually be heading in the wrong direction.

To see if any progress has been made in the past two years,
we are once again conducting an Exchange Insta-Poll on
child care wages in North America. We encourage you to help
make this poll as accurate as possible by providing your
center’s wage information (anonymously, of course). Then,
over the course of the coming days, go to our home page and
see how your wages stack up. To participate, go to
http://secure.ccie.com/survey/index.php?survey_id=113
